The Little Valley Lions bring back the “Quidditch Games” | New

LITTLE VALLEY – Muggles and wizards will fly again at the Little Valley Lions Club Quidditch Games fundraiser on August 20.

This year’s “Quidditch Games: Win the Cup” event will take place at the sports field behind the Little Valley VFW along Route 353. Wizard Dumbledore will oversee the games with the help of the golden snitch, Michael Mosley.

Sideline spectators will enjoy watching and cheering on their favorite team as Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Gryffindor and Ravenclaw face off in an intense tournament based on the Hogwarts games featured in the Harry Potter fantasy films.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, Quidditch is a mixed contact sport with a unique blend of elements from rugby, dodgeball and tag. A team is made up of seven athletes who play with brooms between their legs at all times.

“Some team members play on broomsticks and some on pool noodles, but the goal is to run between the legs or the competitors don’t fly,” Lion Myrna Reynolds said. “It’s just a fun thing and of course we use teenage rules with no tackle. We use the safe and sensible rules because it’s a tough game.

The Quidditch Competition is a unique event organized by the Little Valley Lions Club to raise funds for the club’s vision programs, including the annual “SEE” eye screening program for children in pre-kindergarten, the Ross Eye Institute’s Vision Beyond Sight, K-9 Helpers for the Handicapped and Camp Badger for youth with special needs. The club serves the communities of Little Valley, Cattaraugus and Salamanca.

Anyone 14 and older who wants to play on a team should call (716) 353-0177.

Reynolds said the club thanks all individuals and groups who donate to the event. Donations can be made to the Little Valley Lions Club, c/o Lion Myrna Reynolds, 4195 Route 219-Lot 15, Salamanca, NY 14779.
