The Betfred League 1 final will be shown live on The Sportsman

Sunday’s vital Betfred League 1 promotion play-off final between Swinton Lions and Doncaster will be shown exclusively live and free on The Sportsman.

The Dons secured their place in Sunday’s season-ending showdown with a comprehensive 52-20 loss to the Rochdale Hornets in their preliminary round at Eco-Power Stadium. Their reward is another chance against the Lions at Heywood Road.

The two teams have met before in the qualifying semi-final, with Swinton winning 32-12. Now they meet for a place in the Betfred Championship in 2023.

Swinton will enter the game as a slight favorite thanks to their home advantage, acquired after finishing in second place behind undefeated champions Keighley Cougars in the regular season. Doncaster finished fourth, two points behind, but won 26-12 at Heywood Road in July. This result was a reward for a 64-22 home loss to Swinton in the third set.

But Sunday’s clash will decide who goes up alongside Keighley to replace relegated Dewsbury Rams and Workington Town in the second tier of British rugby league.

Doncaster are looking to return to the Championship after a seven-year stint in the lowest professional league. They fell at that hurdle last season, losing 36-12 to Workington, having reached a promotion final in 2019 and semi-finals in 2016 and 2018.

For Swinton, a win would give them an immediate return to the Championship following their relegation alongside Oldham last season. Allan Coleman, who was temporarily in charge of the Lions for the final stages of the 2021 campaign, has been appointed as head coach for 2022 and led the Greater Manchester side to 17 out of 21 regular season and play-off wins.

Sunday’s final begins at 2:00 p.m. BST, with coverage beginning on The Sportsman and The Sportsman Rugby League on YouTube at 1:45 p.m.
