LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Block Island Lions Club Golf Tournament Results
For the editor,
On Monday, July 11, the Block Island Lions Club held their 36th annual golf tournament at Richmond Country Club. Players from the island, as well as many golfers from the mainland, came together for a perfect day of golf.
All proceeds benefit the scholarship fund or educational enrichment programs for students at Block Island School. Each year, the Club awards a scholarship to one or two senior graduates and will continue for three additional years if the student has good academic results. Students currently receiving scholarships are: Julia Butcher, Fiona Crawford, Moira O’Neill, Charlotte Hall, Stephanie Rich, Rory Crawford and Amira Veldman-Wilson.
The winning team with a score of 8 under was composed of: Scott Heinz, Chris Phelan, Rich Martin and Austin Martin. The Richmond Country Club offered a free round of golf for four people and each received a $25 gift certificate to the Red Bird. Tammy Tyler of Tyler Electrical, the only female golfer in this tournament, won prizes for longest drive and closest to the pin. Mark Gentile won the men’s event closest to the pin and Dave Casperson won the longest workout. Chris Robb won the 50/50 coin toss. The other raffle winners were: Mike Anderson, Jon Bates, Mark Emmanuelle, Dave Joyner, Chris Robb and Dave Foley.
The Golf Committee would like to thank the following individuals and businesses for their support: Interstate Navigation provided complimentary round-trip boat tickets. For many years, the Linda family has donated tickets for the July and September tournaments. New England Airlines has long supported flights for two from Westerly to Block Island as well as T-shirt sponsorship. Thank you to our sponsors and award donors, many of whom have been generous over the years.
