Detroit Lions announce gaming community on Rival platform

DETROIT – The Detroit Lions today announced the launch of their online gaming community, Lions Gaming, in conjunction with fan engagement platform Rival.

“This collaboration with Rival creates a tremendous engagement platform for us,” said Emily Griffin, senior vice president of marketing and brand for the Detroit Lions. “It allows us to connect with Lions fans in the unique environment of virtual gaming and for our fans to engage with each other. We are excited to have the opportunity to reach a new audience in the esports space thanks to this program.”

Lions Gaming will provide its online gaming community with the ability to host regular tournaments across a variety of game titles, even outside of sports. Members of this free community will play to win cash prizes, Lions memorabilia and unique esports experiences.

The Lions will host their first gaming tournament featuring Madden 23 on Saturday, September 17. Two separate tournaments will take place on XBOX and PS. The grand prize winner will receive a cash prize of $500 and an autographed soccer ball by Barry Sanders.

Upcoming tournaments include Super Smash Bros on Nintendo Switch as well with a $500 cash prize and Lions autographed merchandise awarded to the winner. As the program grows, the Lions plan to expand their community by introducing tournaments featuring battle royalestyle games, like Fortnite, with custom prizes.

Leveraging the Rival fan engagement platform and its points system and digital currency, players will be ranked on their organization’s leaderboard for skill and participation. Throughout the season, points are awarded based on wins, losses, and attendance.

“With the launch of Lions Gaming, the organization has created an exciting new way to engage with its fanbase and expand the brand into new areas,” said Dan Parise, Chief Marketing Officer of Rival. “We are excited to launch this new initiative on our platform and look forward to the next calendar of innovative Lions programs.”

Rival powers the gaming communities of more than 40 partners worldwide, across sports properties, media, technology and brands, including NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS and of the English Premier League.
