A local high school rugby player has been called up to the Lions U15 side.
Tyler Maclennan, a ninth grade student at Fourways High School, said he was delighted to hear the news of his call-up to the rugby team. Tyler was previously announced as a Lions U13 side but Covid-19 reared its ugly head and stopped the sport from taking place.
He said he was interested in sports from a young age. “My dad and I used to watch rugby together on TV which got me interested in the game. My primary school introduced rugby when I was in 4th grade and I was hooked. I love athletics, watching rugby and the UFC,” he said.
Tyler plays for Diggers Rugby Club in Randburg where he was selected for the Inter-Provincial Trials and chosen to the final squad of the Lions U15 squad.
“I’m very happy and delighted with myself because I know it’s a really big stepping stone for me. I’ve been training with my dad since I was seven years old at the Pound for Pound gymnasium doing boxing, of wrestling and MMA.
“I am very grateful to my coaches at Diggers Rugby Club and my coach at Fourways, thank you Golden Lions for this opportunity. A lot of people doubted my abilities but look at me now.
Tyler concluded that looking ahead in his career, it was just the beginning and hoped to become a professional player.
