WEBSTER CITY – Stocking caps and extra layers of clothing were more of an unspoken requirement rather than a suggestion on the golf course as Tuesday afternoon slipped into the evening hours, but less than ideal conditions n didn’t stop the Wester City boys’ golf team from claiming their second victory in as many outings at The Links.

Drew Schwering continued to lead the team with a consistent round that included four pars and a birdie, and the Lynx picked up a key win in the Central North Conference doubleheader by edging Clear Lake by three strokes, 162- 165.

Getting a competitive round was the most important thing, WCHS head coach Eric Dawson said, and adding a win to the resume was a bonus.

“We have three weeks before the sections and we don’t even feel like we’ve trained much because of the weather,” said Dawson. “But we are ahead of schedule, that’s for sure. The time we were able to spend was quality time.

Schwering picked up his second straight medal honor, although this time he shared it with Clear Lake’s Gavin Anderson. Both rounds carded 3 of 39.

Schwering birdied the par-4 fourth hole, but more importantly, he avoided scoring a big number that comes with a double bogey or worse.

“I’m very happy with Drew,”said Dawson. “He has worked hard over the past few years and it is paying off. He has been our most consistent player so far.

“Drew avoids doubles and we talked about it with the other children. The middle of the green and a two-putt are a player’s best friends.

Garrett Arnold was the No. 2 Lynx for the second straight meeting as he was just one stroke off the pace with a 40. His turn was on cruise control for the most part with six pars, but he had some trouble with a double-bogey 7 on the par-5 seventh.

Braden Doering shot a 41 and Beau Klaver added a 42 to complete the WCHS score. Doering drained a birdie putt in the seventh, but first suffered a double bogey on the tricky par-3 downhill. Klaver’s round included four pars, four bogeys and a double.
