No. 2 Lions host bracket plays in Southland Baseball Tournament

HAMMOND, Louisiana – The No. 2 seeded University of Southeastern Louisiana baseball team is hosting bracket games in the early rounds of the 2022 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament this weekend at the Pat Kenelly Diamond at the Alumni Field.

No. 3 seed New Orleans (28-21, 13-11 SLC) and No. 6 seed Houston Baptist (18-34, 11-13 SLC) will square off at 1 p.m. Thursday to kick off the action in the Hammond bracket. The Southeast (24-27, 14-10 SLC) will face No. 7 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (26-26, 10-14 SLC) at 6 p.m. Thursday in the nightcap.

Fans in the Hammond area can listen to SLU game shows on the South East Sports Radio Network’s flagship station – KSLU 90.9 FM – in addition to being online at and via the Lions Gameday Experience, Mixlr and MyTuner Radio apps. The MyTuner application is compatible with the Apple CarPlay software available in most recent car models. Fans should search for SLU Athletics (Mixlr) or Southeastern Sports Radio Network (MyTuner).

All tournament matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The Lions have won six of their last seven conference series.

Preston Faulkner (.306) teams with Christian Garcia (.268) and Shea Thomas (.266) to survey southeast at home plate. Faulkner leads the team with 28 extra hits, including 13 Southland-leading homers to go along with 55 RBIs. The RBI total ranks second in the conference. Tyler Finke ranks second in Southland with 23 stolen bases. Rhett Rosevear (30) leads the nation in HBP and the Lions (105) rank third as a team behind Purdue (108).

Faulkner enters the weekend tied for second (33) on Southeastern’s career home run chart with Jeremy Gross (1997-98). He is now third (161) in career RBIs, behind Brent Taylor (1986-89), second by three. Faulkner is also fourth (42) in career HBP, three behind Rosevear who sits in third place (45) and eighth in doubles (42).

With two steals at LSU, Finke (51) passed Rod Morris (1987-88) for ninth place on the program’s stolen base list. He is currently three behind Tommy Ferrand (1994-96).

reliever Gage Trahan is fifth on the single-season saves chart (10). He joins Chris Franklin (2009), Stefan Lopez (2012), Mason Klotz (2013) and Jared Biddy (2019) as the only Lion pitchers to record double-digit saves in a single season. The total also ties him to seventh on the list of career saves.

After winning five games in a row, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi lost two of three games at Incarnate Word last weekend.

Brendan Ryan (.345), Tre Jones (.328), Max Puls (.322) and Steven Rivera-Chijin (.313) are the Islanders’ top hitters. Rivera-Chijin leads the conference with 22 doubles while Jones ranks third with 10 homers. Josh Caraway completed a team record 39 carries. Ryan leads Southland in interceptions by one on Finke.


The winner of Thursday’s first-round contest advances Friday at 6 p.m. with the winner of Thursday’s 1 p.m. game between No. 3 seed New Orleans (27-21, 13-11 SLC) and the top seeded #6 Houston Baptist (18-34, 11-13 SLC). The losers of each match in the first round will face off in an elimination contest at 1 p.m. Friday.


Booklets for all tournaments are $75 for adults and $40 for youth (ages 3-12), while general admission tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth (ages 3-12). ). Students from participating institutions of the Southland Conference, with a valid university ID, and children under 2 years old are admitted free. Gameday parking is $5 per day for standard vehicles and $25 for RVs.
