Benton, KY (May 16, 2022) Marshall County Parks is thrilled to announce a partnership with the Calvert City Lions Club for a fundraiser to benefit the Miracle League of Western Kentucky. The Lions Club has generously agreed to match any donations received during the months of May and June up to a maximum of $5,000.
The Miracle League removes the barriers that prevent children with mental and physical disabilities from hitting the baseball field and allowing them to experience the joy of America’s favorite pastime. Since the primary barriers for these adults come from the natural grass pitches used in conventional leagues, Miracle League teams play on a custom-designed rubber turf pitch that can accommodate wheelchairs and other assistive devices while helping to prevent injuries.
But it’s more than playing a game. The Miracle League is about making new friends, building self-esteem, and being treated like other athletes. To help athletes, the Miracle League uses a “buddy” system – pairing each player with a valid peer. The result is a bond that cannot be described. The Miracle League serves children and adults who suffer from any physical or mental disability that intentionally or unintentionally excludes them from mainstream baseball leagues.
Work has now officially begun on the CFSB Field of Dreams site at Mike Miller Park. As we are now on the verge of making this dream a reality for future Western Kentucky athletes, we invite everyone to participate by making an online contribution at https://secure.givelively.org/donate/marshall-county-parks-incorporated/miracle-league-of-western-kentucky-calvert-city-lions-club-match or by texting MIRACLEKY to 44-321. The shirts are also available for purchase at the Mike Miller Park Visitors Center MF 8-4:30 with 100% of sales directly benefiting the Miracle League as well.
