Lions win series opener at Nicholls
THIBODAUX, Louisiana – The University of Southeast Louisiana baseball team held on for a Southland Conference victory over Nicholls, 3-2, Thursday at the Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field, retaining a share of the first place in the conference standings.
Southeastern (23-26, 13-9 SLC) keeps pace with McNeese (28-21, 13-9 SLC) who won 23-5 at Houston Baptist.
The Lions took the lead in the third inning with a two-out single to center field from the bat of Rhett Roseveardrive in Bryce Grizzaffi of the second goal.
SLU extended their lead to 2-0 in the sixth. Preston Faulkner tackled Rosevear from second with an RBI single to the right.
Nicholls (24-21, 11-11 SLC) responded with a run late in the set, halving the Lions lead.
Tristan Welch provided an insurance run in the seventh with a solo home run. It was the ninth homer of the season for the senior from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The Colonels scratched a run in the eighth, falling back a run.
Gage Trahan worked a scoreless ninth, collecting his ninth stoppage of the season. The total ranks second in the Southland. It also ties Stefan Lopez (2011) for fifth in the Lions season chart and Kade Granier (2015-19) for ninth in the program’s career chart.
Will Kinzeler (4-1) earned the win, allowing one run in six innings of work. He scattered five hits and three walks, striking out three batters. Devin Desandro (3-4) suffered the loss, giving up three runs in 6.1 innings pitched.
Dalton Aspholm whipped up five batters in two innings of relief work, closing the gap between Kinzeler and Trahan.
The series continues Friday at 6 p.m. SLU should start first year left-handed Adam Guth (3-1, 5.24) on the mound and Nicholls will counter with junior southpaw Tyler Theriot (7-3, 2.88).
