Lions fall in series finale, 5-2

NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – The University of Southeastern Louisiana baseball team lost 5-2 to Northwestern State on Sunday in Southland Conference action at Brown-Stroud Field.

Northwestern State (21-22, 9-9 SLC) took an early lead, capitalizing on an error by Southeastern (19-25, 9-9 SLC) to score three unearned runs in the first inning.

A sacrificial fly tackled another demon run in the second.

Hunter O’Toole took over on the mound for starter Andre Landry with two out in the third, striking out the first batter he faced to end the inning.

O’Toole, Daniel Dugas and Hayden Robb combined to calm the Demon bats over the next four innings as SLU worked to get back into the ball game.

Northwestern State starter Drayton Brown recorded seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out seven batters.

The Lions drilled into eighth reliever Gus Collins. Evan Keller bounced a single in the middle and Rhett Rosevear followed by a walk. Tyler Finke reached on the field of choice of a defender who erased Rosevear in the second. After Finke stole second base, Preston Faulkner shot a two-run single into left center field.

Late inning, a solo home run by the Demons cut SLU’s deficit to three.

The Lions put a pair in ninth, but failed to get through a run.

Brown (5-4) picked up the win. Landry (2-5) suffered the loss, allowing four runs – including one earned – in 2.2 innings pitched.

Faulkner (2 for 3) turned in a multi-hit performance for Southeastern.

Southeastern is two games behind early Houston Baptist, McNeese and Nicholls with two weekends remaining in the conference schedule.
